Job Description
As a Senior Speech & Language Therapist, you will work within a secondary school setting in South East London (SE9), supporting primarily verbal autistic students through a neurodiversity-affirming and relationship-led approach. This is not a traditional clinic-based SLT role. Instead, the setting offers the opportunity to deliver meaningful, functional support within students’ everyday educational environments, helping develop social communication, emotional regulation, independence, and engagement in learning.
This role is well suited to a Band 6 equivalent Speech & Language Therapist who is comfortable working autonomously, managing and prioritising their own caseload, coordinating therapy timetabling, and contributing to wider MDT discussions and service planning. Alongside direct clinical work, you will play an active role in collaborative working with education staff, supporting therapeutic strategies across the school environment, and helping shape a progressive, neurodiversity-affirming therapy culture.
Working closely with other SLTs, Occupational Therapists, a drama therapist, and a dyslexia teacher, you will contribute to a holistic model of care focused on real-life outcomes. This setting does not follow ABA, PBS, or behaviourist-only models and will particularly appeal to therapists seeking a more affirming, relationship-led way of working.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and prioritise an independent caseload within a school-based setting
- Coordinate and oversee therapy timetabling and clinical workload management
- Deliver functional, evidence-informed speech and language interventions for autistic students
- Support students with social communication, emotional regulation, and engagement in education
- Develop and implement individualised therapy plans and outcome measures
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to support holistic care planning
- Provide practical, in-class support and communication strategies where appropriate
- Contribute to wider service development and therapeutic planning within the school environment
- Support teaching staff with embedding communication strategies across daily practice
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, reports, and EHCP-related input where required
- Promote a neurodiversity-affirming, relationship-led approach across the wider setting
Requirements
- You must have the permanent right to work in the UK – no sponsorship available
- Qualified Speech & Language Therapist with HCPC registration
- Experience working at Band 6 level or equivalent within schools, paediatrics, SEN, or autism services
- Confident managing an independent caseload and coordinating therapy schedules autonomously

- Strong understanding of social communication needs within neurodiverse populations
- Excellent clinical reasoning and ability to deliver functional, real-world interventions
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with students, families, education staff, and professionals
- Values-led approach aligned with neurodiversity-affirming and relationship-based practice
- Also suitable for: Senior Speech & Language Therapist, Band 6 SLT, Paediatric Speech & Language Therapist, Autism Specialist SLT, SEN Speech Therapist, School-Based Speech Therapist
